Frequently asked questions
Can I open an account with Interactive Brokers myself?
Yes, you can. You can do this absolutely free of charge through the Interactive Brokers LLC website or mobile app.
Can I open an account with a broker other than Interactive Brokers, such as Exante or Freedom Finance Europe?
No, unfortunately this is not possible. We are registered advisors and wealth managers only with Interactive Brokers LLC and are not currently considering obtaining such registration with other brokers. This is due to two reasons: commissions with Interactive Brokers LLC are much lower than with other brokers, which allows us to significantly reduce commission costs, thereby increasing client profits and our remuneration as advisors, respectively. The second point concerns insurance of assets in a brokerage account. In many European countries, the amount of insurance coverage is only 20,000 euros. In the USA, the amount of insurance coverage for a brokerage account is 500,000 US dollars, which is more suitable for us and our clients.
Why do I need this product if I can get 18% in hryvnia for government bonds?
Different target audiences have different needs and requests. For some, buying government bonds in hryvnia looks like an excellent investment. However, for amounts of $50-100 thousand, there are additional factors that influence the choice of investment instruments. Among them:
– a stable and predictable source of income outside Ukraine;
– protection of capital from depreciation by transferring assets to hard currency;
– purchase of assets that tend to appreciate in price, respectively, an increase in the amount of capital;
– Transfer of capital to a more reliable jurisdiction;
– stable and predictable cash flow in currency;
– diversification of the risks of having 100% of capital in one country;
When a person’s capital crosses the threshold of $50-100 thousand, the main factor to pay attention to is no longer profitability, but reliability and preservation of capital. Therefore, not all investors consider government bonds to be the most optimal option for investing their funds.
What to do if a company in the portfolio starts having problems?
It is likely that one or more companies in the portfolio may start to have problems. We have encountered this more than once, so there are ready-made solutions:
1. Situation one – we discovered the problem in advance and can sell the stock at a profit. The best option is to simply exit the position and fix the profit.
2. Situation two – we noticed it when the position was already averaging. This is worse than the first scenario, but very often, thanks to averaging, you can exit without losses (one part of the shares is in the red, and the other is in the red). We sell the position, the profit on one part of the shares covers the loss from the other and redistribute the capital.
3. Situation three – the problem became obvious when the stock had already lost up to 20% of its value. The situation is not the most pleasant, but it is not entirely impossible. If we understand that it will only get worse in the future, then we look for a “springboard” to replace this stock. We look for a good company that is currently undervalued and is trading at a discount of up to 20% of its real value. Then we exit the negative position by selling it at a loss and buy a good company at a discount. When the company returns its value, we sell it and return our money. This scenario is not excluded and we have already gone through this process many times and thus returned the invested money.
4. Situation four – a sharp change in the company’s business or external environment has led to its fall by more than 20%. This is the worst of the potential situations, since in this case there is nothing much to do except wait for the company’s business to go up or the external environment to change and the quotation to return to at least the -20% zone. To avoid the criticality of such situations, we make a wide diversification, in which the share of one company usually does not exceed an average of 2-3% of the capital. Accordingly, even the complete bankruptcy of the company will not prevent the portfolio from quickly recovering and continuing its growth.
How are taxes paid in the USA and Canada?
For citizens of Ukraine, the tax on dividends on US and Canadian stocks is 15% of the amount of dividends received. This tax is calculated and withheld by the broker automatically. No additional actions by the client are required for this. At the end of the year, an extract of all taxes paid is available in your personal account.
I've seen other money managers charge only 1-2% commission. Why are your fees so different?
There are several models for calculating commissions for capital management. Almost all capital managers use a commission model based on the calculation of 1-2% of the capital amount per year, regardless of the result. We believe that this model is not a WIN-WIN model, since even in the case of a negative result, the manager receives his commission, which is generally not the most optimal solution for the client.
Therefore, we decided that this commission model does not suit us, and we will use only the model of dividing the received profit between the manager and the client, so that everyone is interested in the most positive result. In order for us to earn a lot, our clients must first earn a lot. It’s simple.
In terms of the final costs of management commissions, our models do not differ. With a capital of $ 100,000 in the usual model, the manager receives $ 1,000 – $ 2,000 per year, even if the result of his work is unsatisfactory. In our commission model, with a portfolio of 100,000 USD and a return of 10% per annum, we will receive 1500-1900 USD per year in commissions, but only if we bring the client a real 10% of the profit, which is credited to the client’s account as the received profit. If the profit is less, then the commissions will be less. No profit – no commissions. Everything is transparent and only WIN-WIN.
Can I lose money on these investments?
You can. Shares are not a guaranteed return instrument and involve risk and risk premium. However, it is possible that a partial loss of capital may result. We do everything possible to manage risks and prevent capital loss, but such an option is not excluded. In the event of such an outcome, we do not bear any financial responsibility and are not obliged to cover this loss. All financial responsibility lies entirely with the investor. If you are not ready for a partial loss of capital, we recommend that you consider other investment instruments
Can I transfer an already opened account with Interactive Brokers LLC to you for management?
Yes, you can. We will tell you how to connect an already opened account to our management. It is quite simple and does not take more than 5 minutes. The entire procedure for connecting to management is carried out by Interactive Brokers LLC.
Can I deposit money gradually instead of $50,000 at once?
Yes, you can deposit money gradually, starting from 2000 USD per month and more. We provide this opportunity, because the transfer of money to the broker’s account is associated with certain restrictions from the NBU. The money received in the brokerage account will immediately be directed to the purchase of shares according to your chosen strategy and bring income, however, we do not guarantee the achievement of the target result in this case.
Stocks can go down, not up. How do you manage risk in your portfolio strategies?
Stocks are a fairly volatile asset, so we take all possible measures to manage risks and volatility, namely:
1. From our personal experience, we have learned that the more companies in the portfolio, the lower its volatility. Therefore, all our strategies are designed for 50 companies in the portfolio. Practice shows that after 30 companies in the portfolio, volatility decreases to a relatively small level and simply repeats the market dynamics.
2. Also, from our experience, we have come to the conclusion that it is not worth having one company occupy a share in the portfolio of more than 5% of the total capital. In this case, even a strong drop in the quotes of one of the companies allows the portfolio to be in the profitable zone and calmly “digest” such market surprises.
3. We carefully choose the entry point into the position, and do not buy a stock just because everything is growing and everyone is buying. As Warren Buffett said – If you buy a stock at an overpriced price, it can take you a whole decade just to get back to the break-even point.
4. We constantly monitor data on all companies in the portfolio, and if something starts to not suit us, we exit the position as much as possible.
5. We regularly rebalance the portfolio to smooth out excessive concentrations of capital in one or more companies.
6. We have come to the conclusion that you should always have at least 10% of capital in cash so that you can buy back on dips or buy shares of one company in advance to replace another at a good price. This allows you to be more flexible in making decisions and managing risks.
Can I withdraw money from my brokerage account at any time?
Yes, you can. Simply submit a withdrawal request to the broker and the money is usually in your account the next day.
How are dividends paid?
Dividends are credited to your brokerage account automatically and appear on your brokerage account the same day and on your bank statement the next day. Dividends from Canadian stocks are credited to your brokerage account the next business day after payment.
How are management fees paid?
The management fee is paid only after dividends have been credited to this account or a trading profit has been recorded (i.e. after something is bought for $100 and sold for $120, a commission of $20 will be deducted from this). The broker automatically deducts the trading profit commission once a month or once a quarter, based on the actual recorded trading profit, based on the profit report for this account. Dividend commissions are paid by invoicing. We will send an invoice for the dividend commission every month or every quarter. All commissions paid by you will be reflected in your account statement, which you can view at any time yourself.
Why can't I just buy the S&P 500 and get the same projected 10% annual return?
You can buy the S&P 500 index and get 10% per annum over the long term. However, you can get 10% per annum in different ways. You can wait 10 years and get all the profit in 10 years by selling shares and fixing the profit for the entire term. The disadvantages of this approach are the inability to use the profit for the entire investment period until the fixation, the long investment period until the profit is received, and the fact that at the moment of fixing the profit, the future expected cash flow immediately drops to zero, since all the capital is removed from work.
The second approach is that you can receive profit from either dividends or profit from rebalancing and the ability to use the profit at your own discretion without having to sell shares. Practice shows that for most people it will be better to be able to receive income more regularly and stably for a long period of time, which allows you to count on these incomes in planning everyday expenses. This is our main difference and our advantage. Most of this income comes in the form of “hard money” that you can withdraw to your bank account and use for your own purposes.
Where can I find the agreement for the provision of these services?
We are not tax residents of Ukraine. All our actions are regulated exclusively in accordance with US law. The broker (Interactive Brokers LLC) is directly responsible for compliance with all legal procedures and legal norms, therefore everything necessary for the implementation and compliance with all legal procedures is already integrated into the brokerage platform through which all operations and transactions take place. The agreement is available for review on the Interactive Brokers LLC website. The broker will provide you with an agreement for review when connecting your brokerage account to our capital manager and only after you review the agreement and sign it online will your account be connected to management. You will also be informed about our commissions once again directly from Interactive Brokers LLC and only after your confirmation will the commissions come into effect and be automatically debited from your brokerage account. That is why we chose an American broker and this jurisdiction. Everything has been thought out and automated for a long time. Minimum actions – maximum protection.
